A Balanced Diet

Do you remember back in school we were thought since then to eat portions daily according to a system? It was designed to keep our eating balanced with the right daily nutrition and energy required for our optimal functions.Remember the food pyramid? Now ho many of us do follow this global standard in eating regularly or even made an attempt to emulate the recommendations set out by this recommended system? I for one wouldn't have bothered at my growing up years, but now hitting 45, I am keen to understand my eating habits and daily intake so as to keep my diet balanced, nutritious and energy intake that suffice for my daily performance. And oh, I've also started calorie counting to add to the whole food intake regime.

"Did you know? The Malaysian RNI 2017 recommends 2200 kCal/day for adult men and 1800 kCal/day for adult women for optimal energy intake."

The Great Balance

In a recent announcement made by the Ministry of Health, as quoted in ann online article by The Star on the 12th of Oct 2022, "The National Morbidity and Health Survey 2019 (NHMS 2019) recorded prevalent obesity in adults aged 18 and above at 19.7%, while 30.4% of them were overweight. It means that one out of two Malaysian individuals (50.1%) are overweight and obese, and out of the total, the issue of obesity among civil servants working in government agencies and departments had reached 41.4%." And it is also quoted in the same article that the Ministry is looking into providing calorie count data to restaurants and food producers to display on their menu to help Malaysians in their daily food calorie intake.  The article went on to say that "MOH will prepare the information (calorie count) so that they (entrepreneurs) can place it on the menu in their food outlets,".

  • Malaysian Food Pyramid is a simple guide for individuals to vary their foods intake according to the total daily food serving recommended.
  • A food pyramid consists of four (4) levels that represent five (5) food group. Indicated beside each food group is the recommended number of servings per day from each group.
  • From the bottom to the top of the food pyramid, the size of each food group becomes smaller indicating that an individual should eat more of the foods at the base of the pyramid and less of the foods at the top of the pyramid.

All these efforts points back to the humble food pyramid. To help us eat a balanced diet and thus have a healthy lifetysle. Unused daily calories are stored in our bodies aas fats and that is the main reason for the rise of obesity among Malaysians in general due to our high intake of calorie rich food and our sedantary lifestyle that becomes a double whammy in our effort to become a healthy nation. So why is it si hard to achieve this? Is it because the food we eat is just too delicious to give us? Or its just to difficult to follow such strictness under the guidance of the food pyramid?
